The Chief Data Officer (CDO) is a strategic role for many different companies in many industries because data is having a dramatic impact on business.
The most mature and most data-fluent organizations are now using data to determine new business opportunities and new products to develop as well as how to be more efficient, more productive and more competitive. CDO's purpose is to break down barriers that remain between IT, the data function and the business units.
The CDO is not only a data expert but also a seasoned operational manager. As the role is transformational, the CDO is responsible for the adoption of data technologies across the entire business. As with most senior executive titles, the responsibilities are set by the organization's board of directors or other authority, depending on the organization's legal structure. The CDO is responsible for user data experiences across the entire enterprise and its operations.
The first two reported Chief Data Officers were in Capital One (2002) and Yahoo (2005). Today over 60 industry leaders, and over 65% of all enterprises surveyed have CDOs. Included are American Express, Bank of America, Capital One, Charles Schwab, CitiGroup, Fidelity Investments, Ford Motors, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, IBM, Wells Fargo, and VISA.
