IT Job Market data makes the employment picture for IT Pros grim at best
Employment picture grim for IT Pros
The IT Job Market continues to shrink while the number of unfilled jobs remains high
Summerlin South -NV - e-janco.com - Jreported earlier that the IT job picture decayed in October. That seems to be continuing with the latest job opening report released by the BLS. The CEO of Janco, Victor Janulaitis, said, "The BLS has delayed the release of its full employment situation report until December 16. That will be a week after the Fed releases its latest interest rate adjustment." Janulaitis also said, "According to the BLS data, the number of job openings for IT Pros moved from 203K in September to 173K in October. At the same time, the number of hires moved from 94K to 95K. Based on the data, it seems that companies pulled back on the number of IT Pros they were hiring."

Victor Janulaitis, said, "The number of unfilled IT Positions has moved from 106K in December 2024 to 173K in October on a steady climb up. A few of those openings are for legacy applications to fill vacancies; most are for new technologies like OmniCommerce, Blockchain, AI, and LLMs, which many existing IT Pros do not have the skills." He added, "The employment situation and unemployment data published two weeks ago show that the unemployment rate for IT Pros was 7.0% versus 4.4% for the US Labor market."

On Nov 20, 2023 the BLS reported the September National Unemployment Rate was 4.4% and 7.0% for IT Professionals.

Janulaitis said, "The IT Job market continues to shrink. In the last report by the BLS, the overall employment picture was that the telecommunications job market was losing 900 jobs, computer system design and related services losing 2,300 jobs, Data Processing and Hosting losing 500 jobs, and with only a small increase (1,400 jobs added) in Other Information services." He added, "For the last three reported months, there has been a net loss of 4,800 jobs. The BLS data is in line with what we have found in our interviews with both CIOs and CFOs in companies that have IT departments with at least 100 IT professionals, either as employees or contractors."

CIOs and CFOs have stopped hiring IT Pros except for required replacements as a result the rate of hiring IT pros slows.

IT Job Market Shrinks for a 3rd Year in a Row
The CEO summarized, "Based on the data published by the BLS and Janco's proprietary employment statistics, we forecast there will continue to be a decrease in the size of the US job market for IT Pros through the 1st quarter of 2026."
