Top paid CIO positions have broad responsibilities

Janco has just completed its review of the top paid CIOs in publicly traded companies. Two of the individuals who were on the list last year have had their roles expanded so they have more than IT within their scope of responsibilities. They are Meg McCarthy at Aetna and Steve Sqaueri at American Express and are excluded from the list as is John Hishaw of HP has a much broader role than IT.
Some of the individuals in the this years list also have broad operational responsibilities. If they are successful this year they will be excluded from next year's list.

In reviewing the list of highest paid CIOs, Janco comes to the conclusion that the position is very volatile. Of the top 20 positions only 8, or 40% were on the list last year, at the same time another 8 are either new to the job or have left the company. In one case the top CIO, was only in that role at the company for 9 months before he left.

We were only able to get information on these companies as all companies reported information that we could use. For example Marc Gordon was appointed the CIO of American Express late in 2012 but not soon enough to be included in 2012 SEC filings. In addition, many of the individual on last year's list have left their companies, such as Keith Halbert who reportedly received a $3,000,000 severance package, and their replacements have not made our list for various reasons. In addition Lori Beer has left Wellpoint and has been replaced by A.J. Lang.
